From my perspective, it does help in relieving stress, especially after a long day's work. Another reason is the fact that it keeps people awake when they need to. This should explain why coffee and cigarettes become a great combination in keeping people up. The final notable reason has something to do with hand fixation. Some smokers say that they just feel more comfortable with a cigarette in hand. Therefore, hand fixation seems like the most suitable way to explain why smokers like to have a cigarette in hand.
